From time to time trees have to be removed due to them being unsafe, however if it’s not always easy to spot whether they are unsafe or are a potential hazard. We’ve listed 5 signs that a tree is unsafe, so if you spot any of the following contact one of our friendly tree surgeons today.
Dead Branches
Dead branches are an easy way to spot if there is a problem with the tree, especially if there are a lot of them. It can sometimes just be a sign that a tree needs pruning, however it’s best to get a second opinion as excessive dead branches can mean the tree is losing nutrients and is potentially dying.
Leaning
While trees often lean in the wind, usually they will return to their normal position once the wind drops. In areas where trees have a lack of cover however, it can become a problem as there isn’t anything protecting the tree from the elements. High wind speeds from the same direction can steadily push the tree to lean in a certain way until eventually it can become uprooted.
Visible Roots
Visible roots can be quite common, and a lot of the time are completely fine, however if the amount of roots visible on the surface is higher than normal it can mean that the tree is finding it difficult to secure its position. If a tree is lacking deep roots it can be more venerable to weather damage and in especially bad conditions, such as a storm it could be ripped from the ground.
Cavities or Cracks
Cavities or cracks can indicate structural damage and can become worse over time leading to much more serious problems, such as the tree completely splitting. Cracks, splits or missing bark can also be a sign that the tree is suffering.
Fungal Growth
If you spot fungal growth on the tree’s trunk or roots don’t ignore it, as this could be weakening the structure of the tree. Fungus indicates that the tree may be rotting, as the fungus feeds on the breakdown of this biological matter, allowing it to spread and eventually take over the tree.
Unless you’re a professional tree surgeon, never attempt to fell a tree yourself. There are many reasons it should be left up to the professionals, the main one being for your own safety. Even if you don’t suspect your tree is unsafe or at risk of disease, we would recommend getting your trees checked by one of our tree surgeons every couple of years to ensure they’re in good health and keep them looking great for years to come.
