Whilst it may seem like an obvious question, many people don’t realise that tree surgeons carry out a wide variety of tasks. Whilst tree removal is a big part of our job, our skills and expertise go much further than this and we can help you with all areas of arboristry. So if you’re looking for tree surgeons in Manchester, give us a call today.
What does a tree surgeon actually do?
The simple description is that we are responsible for the planting, felling, pruning and general care, as well as maintenance of trees. Our tree services expand beyond this though and we can help with you a variety of problems, whether that be checking a tree for death or disease, which can make them a hazard if they were to fall, to advising you on how to get the perfect shape for your tree or hedge.
Some of the jobs we’ve recently carried out include:
- Tree felling/removal
- Tree stump removal
- Tree pruning
- Hedge cutting and trimming
- Crown work
- Pollarding
What makes tree surgery so dangerous?
Tree surgery involves working at heights and that’s usually why people assume it’s one of the most dangerous professions. Whilst this is true, there are more elements that can make it hazardous, such as the equipment that is used.
For tree felling, chainsaws are used and without the correct health and safety precautions you can be at risk of serious injury. All of our tree surgeons are fully trained to handle such equipment and wear protective clothing, such as chainsaw boots and hard hats.
What skills do I need to be a tree surgeon?
Before we get on to the list of skills, it’s important to think whether you would be happy working outdoors all the time before pursuing tree surgery as a career path. The freedom of working outdoors is a major plus, but remember that this entails braving any weather, such as rain or snow – this is England, so the chances of rain are very high.
The key skills you need are:
- Experienced and proficient in a range of machinery and power tools, such as chainsaws.
- A high level of physical fitness, as tree surgery is extremely demanding work. Basic tree climbing skills are also advantageous.
- The ability to crack on with the job in various weather conditions, whether that be high winds, sleet or snow.
Do I need specific qualifications?
There aren’t specific qualifications that are required to be a tree surgeon, but studying something like arboriculture would definitely have its advantages. Emergency First Aid Training is a must and we ensure all employees at Rock Tree Surgeons are fully trained and kept up to date on all areas of first aid.
We are also full City & Guilds NPTC certified, which allows our customers to rest assured knowing we are fully equipped and able to carry out the services we promote.
