We should probably start by telling you that, yes we carry out tree stump removal. But what exactly it is, what is the purpose and how do stump grinders even work? We explain all of this below.
Like many areas of arboristry stump grinding is extremely complex and dangerous work, plus who has a stump grinder lying around? If you require tree stump removal contact one of our Greater Manchester tree surgeons today.
What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding removes the whole stump of a tree using a power tool. It works by chipping away at the wood using a rotating cutting disc, that grinds the stumps, as well as the tree’s roots in to small wood chips.
Stump grinders come in many sizes and can either be as small as a lawn mower, or as large as a van – the size of the stump grinder you’ll need is dependent on the size of the stump, as well as the complexity of the job.
How do Stump Grinders Work?
As mentioned above, stump grinders use rotating cutting discs with carbide ‘teeth’ that slowly chip away parts of the stump. The discs spin at high speeds gradually cutting further down the stump until eventually you’re left with nothing but mulch and sawdust.
Stump grinders are extremely powerful tools and can be dangerous to operate, so this kind of work should always be left to the professionals.
Why would you remove a tree stump?
Tree surgery involves cutting down (or felling) a tree, but tree stump removal is an additional job. If you want to remove the whole tree, including the stump you will also need to use a stump grinder. Some customers are happy leaving the tree stump in place, whereas others see it as unsightly, or may want to re-use the space.
It’s best practice to remove the stump, as whilst some stumps will just rot away, this can take many months. If the tree isn’t dead there is also a chance that the tree will start to grow back, producing shoots of stems and leaves.
As with many types of tree surgery work, the necessary safety equipment should always be worn when carrying out tree stump removal and our post, essential equipment for tree surgeons listsĀ some of the safety items you will need. As mentioned above though we strongly recommend contacting a qualified tree surgeon for this kind of work, so if you’re looking in to stump grinding contact us today on 0161 338 4455 or 07917 798 459.
