As Manchester tree surgeons our job does involve felling trees, however we go out of our way to be environmentally friendly and always endeavour and endorse planting a new tree for everyone that is removed.
It’s important to remember that from time to time trees will need to removed for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to:
- the tree is a hazard or a safety risk
- a tree’s roots is interfering with or damaging a nearby structure
- a tree is dead or has a disease, which could be spread to other nearby trees
With that said we love trees and want as many of them as possible, so with so many businesses, charities and celebrities getting involved with environmental issues, we thought it was a great time to check out the UK organisations that are getting involved.
In recent years it has been brought to the public’s attention more and more the consequences of the loss of trees, land and biodiversity. This has led to a wealth of new initiatives, such as new search engines, such as Ecosia, who vow to plant a tree for every search made through their platform. Just imagine if Google did that!
The younger generation are also more involved than ever with over 600 YouTubers raising over $6 million to plant trees all around the world, as part of their #teamtrees project.
But it’s not just tech start-ups, content creators and well-known individuals leading this change, a lot is happening closer to home as well. UK organisations and charities that are dedicating their time to increase the amount of trees are popping up everywhere, some of which are even in Manchester.
City of Trees
Probably the closest one to home (that we know of at least) is City of Trees, a charity who pledges to plant a tree for every person that resides in the Greater Manchester area. You can already see the difference their work has made in the city, where you will see trees they’ve planted throughout the Northern Quarter, each with a ‘City of Trees’ plaque on it.
Tree Aid
Tree Aid are a UK charity who focus their efforts on planting more trees in Africa, for the environment but also for communities. They claim on average to plant a tree every 30 seconds and have so far planted over 17 million new trees.
The Tree Council
While The Tree Council are responsible for planting a lot of trees, a lot of their work involves working with communities, business and governments to promote the importance of trees in a changing environment. They then work with a wide range of charities and initiatives to increase the amount of trees we have across the country.
Trees for Cities
Although they focus on planting more trees and improving the air quality in the UK, trees for cities work across the world helping countries such as Peru and Ethiopia to develop practical solutions to polluted cities. At home they work with a range of schools to improve air quality and frequently work with local communities.
As well as these new initiatives, there are of course the well-known organisations continuing to look after the environment, including:
- The Woodland Trust
- The Wildlife Trust
- RSPB
- The National Trust
So if you have some spare time, have a look at some of the above charities. They all have frequent meet-ups and volunteering sessions allowing you to get involved and make a difference.
